Are Self Driving Cars really safer?

Self Driving Vehicles are equipped with the highest technology of preventive security -cameras, radar and laser sensors- . They have very quick reactions to any eventuality due to a great ability to process and interpret the environment around them. But are they really safer tan  human- driven-vehicles?

California is one of four states  that have started to issue licenses for such vehicles for testing under "real" conditions. Currently there are fifty Self Driving Vehicles and four  accidents reported.

Three of the injured are the Lexus RX 450h equipped by Google sensors and computers to conduct their autonomous driving test.

These accidents are not the first to suffer Google. Years ago the company recognized other three incidents when they released these units on the roads without official permission. The technology Giant reported that since September their vehicles suffered minor accidents caused by human errors & lack of attention.

Also, the automotive parts supplier Delphi Automotive had another incident with one of its two autonomous prototypes. Despite these data, both firms reported that such accidents were only minor inconveniences.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The US rate for accidents with property damage is about 0.3 per 100,000 miles driven .

Google said its cars have approximately 140.000 miles. Resulting in a high number according to the rate. But also indicated that annually there are five million minor accidents that are not reported to authorities.

So. Is it actually safer an autonomous vehicle? According to official numbers, they are not yet . What is certain is that over time the technology will be refined in the future these models will provide almost zero risk of accidents.
